Our fabulous Elk Viewing, Carriage/Sleigh (seasonal) Gourmet Dinner Ride and Wine Tasting Event is included in all of our retreats. It is always a major hit with all of the quilters! What is waiting for you is luxury, and gourmet food all cooked on two antique wood cook stoves by culinary artist and Thunder Bay Resort owner, Jan Matthias. Thunder Bay Resort is unique in offering an intimate look at wild elk. The setting for your experience is Northern Michigan's charming back woods. You begin by boarding a horse drawn carriage or sleigh that will take you through the wooded resort and away from the daily hustle and bustle. A wooden bridge takes you over the Thunder Bay River and into the Elk Preserve. Here you will get an up close look at majestic bull elk, while remaining safely behind a protective enclosure. Bring your camera as you'll have ample opportunity to snap some pictures. Enjoy the scenery, the smell of pine, and the ever changing face of the Thunder Bay River as the horses make their way deep in the woods to the beautiful Elk Antler Log Cabin. This elegant cabin maintains its rustic appearance while providing every amenity. Warm yourself by the fire, enjoy something from the bar and savor the delicious aromas put forth by the twin antique wood cook stoves as culinary artist Jan Matthias and her staff prepare your gourmet meal. Throughout your dinner you will sample up to six locally produced wines as attentive servers see to your every need. During summer marvel at the bulls' antlers in {Elk Ranch, Velvet Antler, Hunts, Antler Craft }Through summer these antlers are growing up to an inch a day. You may also get a peek at new elk calf. Throughout the fall rut see the bulls spar and strut. Hear them bugle. Its awesome. Snuggle up as winter brings a charming and romantic flavor to the event with the snowy woods and the chilly air. Please note - Bull Elk lose their antlers from mid March to mid April. While they immediately begin growing new antlers, the bulls are somewhat less fascinating during the Quilter's Retreats during April and early May.
