Stoney Acres Winery Adds A New Dimenson To The Sunrise Side![]() A boutique winery in Alpena, Michigan is adding a new dimension to Michigan's Sunrise Side. The first winery in the region, Stoney Acres Winery, is a small family operation that specializes in fruit wines from locally grown raspberries, pears, apples, cherries, blueberries, blackberries and strawberries. Most varieties of wines are offered in dry, semi-dry and semi-sweet versions. Over 30 varieties are now offered including red wines from Merlot grapes and white wines from Reisling grapes imported from outside the region. Stoney Acres offers a tasting room and direct sales at the winery. A few local outlets also feature the wines, but distribution is currently limited by supply. Thunder Bay Resort in nearby Hillman offers perhaps the most unique way to experience the new wines. A wine tasting is being incorporated into the Resort's Signature Event, The Elk Viewing, Carriage/Sleigh Ride, Gourmet Dinners. This event, entering its 13th year, has always featured a choice of several wines as part of culinary artist Jan Matthias's dinners. However, Jan likes to feature local products in her cooking such as Michigan cherries, pears and apples and locally grown raspberries. They also feature Michigan Cherry Coffee. ![]() Guests at the dinner will have the opportunity to sample five different wines. A semi-sweet pear wine and a semi-dry blueberry will both be served with the appetizer course. With dinner a choice of three wines will be offered - semi-dry Silver City Red (Merlot) or Dry Silver City White, or semi-sweet Silver City White (Reisling), and with dessert, the white chocolate mousse filled pizelles with raspberry and white chocolate drizzled topping, samples of the semi-sweet Raspberry and semi-sweet Cherry wines will be served. The five-course gourmet dinners are served in the rustic Elk Antler Log Cabin on the banks of the Thunder Bay River. Jan prepares the entire meal in front of her guests on two 100 year-old wood cook stoves. Rides are offered summer, fall and winter and depending on the season, massive teams of Percheron and Belgian draft horses pull the sleighs or carriages from the Resort into the nearby forests to see the Elk.
